My Evening Supplements

January 19, 2018

If your goal is to improve digestion and increase the quality of your mood and sleep, you are going to love these two supplements!

In addition to my morning supplements (see last blog post) I also have my favourite evening supplements that keep me feeling vibrant. While these particular supplements can also be taken in the morning or throughout the day, I prefer to take these two at night for reasons which I will explain.

The first supplement that I take religiously before bed are my probiotics. I personally love the Genuine Health Advanced Gut Health probiotic because it is a multi-strain probiotic and is enteric coated. Why are these qualities important? A multi-strain probiotic is beneficial because it provides different strains of probiotics (live bacterial cultures) that reside In different parts of our gastrointestinal tract. While taking a single strain probiotic such as lactobacillus acidophilus is not detrimental, you are only taking care of one component of the G.I tract as the lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria resides primarily in the small intestine. Other important bacteria such as bifidobacterium, reside primarily in the large intestine (colon). Probiotics work in synergy with each other to create a well balanced microbiome (our internal community of microbes) and should be taken together. Secondly, an enteric coating on a probiotic ensures the live bacterial cultures survive the journey through our stomach acid and make it into the small and large intestines where they inhabit. Without this enteric coating, we can not guarantee the potency and effectiveness of our probiotic supplement. Since taking this probiotic I have noticed a drastic difference in my digestion, bloating, regularity and skin health! If you suffer from hormonal acne, IBS, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and/or yeast infections, you’re going to want to try this supplement out!

I prefer to take try probiotics at night because this is when our digestive system is fully able to rest and digest. It is during our sleep that our body repairs itself and allows us to adequately digest and absorb nutrients without the influence of daily stressors. This is a perfect time to incorporate a probiotic to allow the good bacteria to reinoculate and help to crowd out the illness causing bad bacteria.

My second evening supplement is 5-HTP. This supplement provides the building blocks for serotonin, our feel-good neurotransmitter. Optimal serotonin production is extremely beneficial to reduce insomnia by providing a calm sense of well being and relaxation which makes it a great nighttime supplement. Studies also suggest serotonin is important in regulating our appetite and mood, and is awesome for sufferers of S.A.D (seasonal affective disorder). This is why 5-HTP could also be a successful supplement to include throughout the day. I rely more on this supplement in the winter as I definitely feel the effects of shorter days and lack of sunlight!
