As a Homeopath, I never take for granted that not everyone has an understanding of Homeopathic medicine.
Homeopathy is the use of small doses of natural substances from plant, animal or mineral sources compounded into remedies. It is based on the ‘Law of Similars’, meaning a substance that creates a particular reaction can also neutralize and rebalance a similar reaction. There are three specific characteristics that set Homeopathy apart from all other methods of health care.
Homeopathy is over two-hundred-thirty-years old and the World Health Organization reports that Homeopathy is the 2nd most widely used primary healthcare modality in the world…
An article in New England Medical Gazette in 1866 reported that it had been observed that patients under Homeopathic care lived longer and led some life insurance companies to offer a 10% discount to Homeopathic patients.
Unfortunately, the medical community in the 21st Century has strayed very far from the use of non-toxic, inexpensive, efficient natural medicines. Fortunately, Homeopathy still holds FDA approval and historically has had no known side-effects. They are safe for babies, adults, the elderly and even your plants and animals. Remedies can be accessed at your local health food store, natural pharmacy, or online.
Why Homeopathy works so well with digestive issues…
As mentioned previously, Homeopathic remedies are dispensed based on observation of symptoms. As an example, if four people in the waiting room of a doctor’s office exhibited cold/flu symptoms, they would probably all be prescribed the same medicine.
If the same four people were visiting the office of a Homeopath, they would probably all receive a different remedy. One might present with a sore throat, another with a sinus issue, another with chest congestion, and so on. The Homeopath, after some observation and case taking, would dispense a specific remedy to relieve the sore throat, another for sinus issues and yet another for the chest symptoms. Each person would receive the remedy best suited to them, not to a ‘cold.’
Let’s discuss how this type of prescribing translates to digestive issues.
The myriad of digestion disorders we know of today, such as Acid-Reflux, Gerd, IBS, and Crohn’s are man-made modern illnesses. Notice I did not refer to them as dis-eases?! They are NOT. They instead represent a disturbance to the biological chemistry of your gut and/or bowel tract.
I have never had a client come in with digestive disorders say they had never had any pharmaceutical intervention. Maybe it was repeated anti-biotics as a child, or steroids for a prolonged injury, or any other number of drugs for an assortment of previous illnesses.
You may have felt better immediately following the treatment, then later other health issues rear their head. New symptoms are either a side-effect of the drug, or suppression of the original disturbace.
What do I mean by suppression?
Chemically-based drugs do not necessarily ‘heal’…instead they can ‘displace’ an issue and sometimes push it deeper into the body. An example is Strep throat (Streptococctal Bacteria). This is a very common affliction among children and highly contagious. The general mode of treatment amongst the medical community is anti-biotics. Most children who have had Strep throat, usually have it more than once. The doctor will state that once the child has contracted Strep they become more susceptible to catching it. But what if that is not true? What if instead, the anti-biotic assisted in killing off part of the bacteria and pushed the rest deeper into the organism?
My experience has proven the latter to be true. Many times when an adult comes in with chronic sinus infections, I ask if they had Strep as a child? The answer is usually, “Yes.” Then I ask if they had their tonsils removed? Again, the answer is usually, “Yes.”
Traditionally, when tonsils are removed, the ‘buds’ are left in. The suppressed Strep can hide in the tissue that was left behind. Now, when the immune system goes down and cannot keep the Streptococcal bacteria at bay, and no longer has the tonsils in place to express itself, it instead travels into the sinus passages. Once I have dispensed a remedy known to affect Strep, the sinus clears up and so does the chronic, reoccurring situation.
The same can happen with your gut and bowel tract. You may have been given antibiotics for a bout of food poisoning (Salmonella or e-Coli). You had immediate relief, but your gut is never quite the same again. Possibly an aspect of the bacteria was suppressed? You may now also have an overgrowth of fungus (Candida), since your good natural bacteria was killed off along with the bad?
Once this happens, the environment of the gut has been changed. In fact, this is the perfect environment to invite parasites and other pathogens to hang out. This is what now creates the ‘man-made’ disturbances in modern times referred to as disease.
So how to get back to a better state of health? By taking an inventory of your symptoms and applying that observation to the remedies listed below. Because each remedy is symptom specific, it can work to help balance the ‘imbalance’ that is causing the discomfort.
If you are new to Homeopathy, it bears mentioning that you do not have to have EVERY symptom listed to be the correct remedy. Instead find the best match for your issues.
Most digestive protocols should be taken twice daily. A dose is approximately 4 pellets and should be dispensed on a clean palette. Wait a few minutes before and after taking the remedy before eating or drinking. The remedies are ‘information’ and when melted in your mouth, sublingually, have an opportunity to cross the blood-brain barrier immediately releasing the information. Suggested protocols should be followed for 12-13 weeks, unless there is rapid improvement. If this is the case, take only as needed after marked improvement. If not enough change with the chosen remedy, move on to the next closest remedy description. Most remedies are repeated twice daily.
The following are some of my favorites and those utilized most often for digestion issues…
Discomfort in esophagus after eating; burning, sour taste
GASTRO-INTESTINAL DISCOMFORT (most common combination)
Can have bloating, gas and palpitations. Possible history of food poisoning, diarrhea, nausea and loose stools. Bad stool with rumbling. This combination works well if there are liver issues. Heartburn after food.
Undigested food in your stool
Digestive discomfort, belching, slow digestion, rumbling, a thirst for cold water.
There can be great lethargy; gastric pain, better from eating; sensation of a plug in the stomach; epigastric region can be tender.
Overindulgence in Food or Drink
This remedy is great for hangovers, or having eaten a few too many bites. Hiccough from over-eating; nausea (feels better after vomiting); food sits like a rock in the stomach.
(Nux vomica + Chelidonium are an excellent combination for an extended protocol.)
There is great prostration.
If the diarrhea is severe combine instead:
If stools are hard combine:
If not enough improvement move on to
Mercurius vivus (or Mercurius sol) 200c + Chelidonium 30c
If there is bleeding, go to:
Sulphur 200c or Hamamelis 30c
Condition Specific Remedies
If there is constipation:
If there is bleeding this remedy can be taken every 15 minutes until it subsides:
Ipecacuanha 30c + Mercurius sol 6c; 2 x’s daily for extended period
Damage from anti-biotics
