Fish Oils For Acne/Skin & Hormone Health?

August 7, 2019

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, play a significant role in reducing inflammation in the body (acne is an inflammatory condition) & provide our body with the precursors to our hormones, including the ones that affect our skin like estrogen and testosterone.

Omega 3 fats are considered essential because the body can not produce them on its own and must be obtained from the diet. Unfortunately, the 'Standard American Diet' leaves ~90% of people deficient! On the other hand, people are consuming and TOO MUCH omega 6 fat from plant oils like *canola oil, *sunflower oil and *soybean oil. Omega 6 fats are PRO- INFLAMMATORY, worsening acne.

To get the most out of your fish oil, you MUST NOT cheap out on your supplement as they’re not all created equal. Here’s why:

1) Where is the product sourced?

Fish oils should be sourced from wild caught fish as opposed to farmed fish. Because of the crowded conditions in which farm raised fish are raised, they are routinely treated with antibiotics to help prevent infection.

SECONDLY- It is preferred the fish is sourced from SMALLER fish such as anchovies because larger fish (such as salmon) contain much higher levels of mercury, lead and PCBs. AquaOmega fish oils shown here source their wild anchovies from the South Pacific. Check the label to see where the fish is sourced from. If it’s not listed, it’s likely farmed.

2) How is the supplement processed?

Heat, light and oxygen can all destroy the delicate double bonds that exist in a polyunsaturated fatty acid. The anti inflammatory benefits of omega 3 fats will no longer serve their purpose.

AquaOmega uses a patented extraction and molecular distillation process, ensuring the freshest, cleanest, most concentrated, and purest-tasting oils. They’ve also added an antioxidant blend of rosemary and green tea extract to help prevent oxidization.

3) EPA and DHA content/serving:

The amount of actual EPA and DHA in each serving should be considered, not just overall mg of fish oil per serving (the two most important omega 3 fats). To get maximum benefits, look for 250-500 mg of combined EPA and DHA each day.

I love both the liquid fish oils and the capsules from Aqua Omega. THEY DO NOT leave a fishy after taste either, which I know a lot of people worry about!
